DANISH RESEARCH REFUTES OUT-DATED US WORK

As a part of the research into her ‘Sweetening the Pill’ documentary, Abby Epstein recently traveled to Denmark to interview Dr Ojvind Lidegaard, a noted European OB-GYN. Denmark’s socialized medical system means that comprehensive records are kept for its millions of citizens. Dr Lidegaard has used this huge data set extensively in his research. During 2016 he published a paper that convincingly refutes the findings of several US Doctors, (who coincidentally are financially supported by drug companies). Drug companies use a bait-and-switch tactic when challenged about the high rate of deaths resulting from use of hormonal birth control, especially the latest Gen 3 and 4 types (NHS studies in the UK put third and fourth-gen HBC at roughly twice as dangerous as second-gen). US pharma defends its products by stating that pregnancy is far more dangerous than using HBC, so what’s the problem? A more appropriate exercise would be to compare HBC risks with other forms of contraception. But no matter; Lidegaard’s work clearly shows that, in fact HBC is of substantially higher risk than pregnancy, more than double depending on the stage of pregnancy. He also links HBC usage to other medical issues such as depression, but that’s a topic for a future post.
This is yet another example of how the public is being kept in the dark about the dangers of these drugs. This Foundation, and others will continue to fight for accurate data to be made available to women so that they can make an informed choice regarding their birth control method.
